History

The Cayuga Bird Club was established in the Fall of 1913, and soon found itself working to establish The Renwick Wildwood Bird Sanctuary, now a part of Stewart Park. Saturday morning bird walks in May became a tradition of the members at that time.  In 1927, upon the tragic death of the club's first president, the Louis Agassiz Fuertes Memorial Bird Sanctuary was established adjacent to the Cascadilla Boathouse.  In 1973, members began to organize many more field trips along with monthly meetings to supplement the May walks. Currently, CBC is active from September to June. Members of the club continue to participate in maintenance of the trails at Renwick Sanctuary. You do not need to be an expert birder to participate in any of the club's activities.

Some of our early history can be found at Bird Lore.

We have our archives available in the division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library. These records are not digitized as yet.
